This note by Frank Leymann, Dieter Roller, and Satish Thatte aims to set forward the goals and principals that formed the basis for the work of the original authors of the BPEL4WS specification. The note is set in context to reflect the considerations that went into the work, rather than being presented as a set of axioms. Much of this material is abstracted from comments and explanations embedded in the text of the specification itself.

Part one in this series describes how to create an example business process that combines a set of fictional travel-related Web services and then deploy that process to the Oracle BPEL Process Manager runtime environment.

Part two presents more-advanced concepts that will enable you to use BPEL to model complex processes.

Policy Studies, Inc. (PSI) uses BPEL as part of an application to support its SCHIP E&E outsourcing business line. SCHIP is a program that offers state-subsidized health insurance coverage to individuals whose incomes are too high to be covered by Medicaid but too low to afford private health insurance. PSI developed its solution with a specific state as the target, but with a strong emphasis on making the system generic and customizable enough to take it to other states, and even to other kinds of operations.

This paper suggests how to map BPEL descriptions into inter-organizational model descriptions, thus opening the door to generating SNet simulations of business processes from BPEL descriptions.
